Are You a First-generation Student
How do I apply to college? Who can I ask for help? How do I find schools to apply to?
MEETING AN URGENT NEED
The Center's work has never been more urgent or needed:
- Today, 1 in 3 undergraduates - nearly 5M students - identify as first-generation.
- Compared to legacy student peers, first-gen students:
- Have fewer financial resources ($41k median parental income vs. $90k).
- Pursue college-level education at lower rates (72% vs. 93%).
- Attain four-year degrees at lower rates (20% vs. 49%).
- Median career earnings of a non-college graduate are $1M less than a college graduate.
- First-gen student population will continue to grow rapidly in the coming years, as the pipeline of first-time undergraduates is heavily weighted with first-gen students.
- Institutions of higher education must shift their mindsets and priorities to better serve first-gen students in order to survive, thrive, and meet their missions.
- Addressing first-generation success has intergenerational impact, as successful college completion is a significant predictor of education, workforce and life success for the families of graduates.

Federal Grants Subvenciones Federales
To apply for a federal grant, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which requires the student's social security number. To qualify for a federal grant, you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or an eligible non-citizen. You are an eligible non-citizen if you:
- are a U.S. permanent resident with a Card (I-551)
- are a conditional permanent resident with an I-551C card
- have an Arrival Departure Record (I-94) from the Department of Homeland Security with any of the following designations: a refugee, asylum granted, a parolee, a Cuban-Haitian entrant, a victim of human trafficking or a holder of T-Visa.
If you are a citizen or eligible non-citizen, you can qualify for federal grants even if your parents are undocumented. When you complete the FAFSA, you can enter all zeros for your parents' social security numbers.
State Grants Subvenciones estatales
Undocumented students are eligible to apply for a MN State Grant and other state financial aid programs if they were granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) prior to establishing state residency or if they meet all the requirements for the MN Dream Act. Otherwise, students must be U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens to apply for a MN State Grant using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
